Lost tips summary
This is a bit of a summary on how not to get lost. But also a couple of reminders or new tips if you will.
First when you go to a new area, somewhere you have never been remember a few tips to avoid getting lost and being able to find your way back.
#1 When hiking remember to look behind you a lot. This way you see what it looks like when going back. You will have a feeling of I have been here before, which of course you have. But it helps you find the way back
.
#2 Look for out of place "landmarks". Things such as a stump, a downed tree, an unusual shaped tree, and rocks large and small. And take note of whether you walked under, over or around these "landmarks".
#3 Heads up.If you walk with your head down you likely will get lost. At the very least you will get turned around, and that can lead to being a long way from where you think you are.Possibly lost.
#4 Use long distance "landmarks" as reference points. Things like a distant mountain or meadow.
#5 Don't Panic! If you realize you don't know where you are and don't know the way back, sit down and remember to breath for enough time to calm your self. Then you can look around for the large "landmarks" to orient yourself. In short time you will see the smaller "landmarks" and you will be back on your way.
Today's tip:
Don't take for granted today's technology. Don't solely rely on it. It can and at some point will let you down.Handheld devices are very good but the can fail. Always have a backup plan. A compass, map of the area are good things to have.A topo map is the best because you can look at what the terrain looks like and Identify where you are. Compare this with your large "landmarks".
Another good way to learn the area is to quiz yourself. Where am I going to come out? Where I want to?If not why? How did I come out into a different area? Different path? Missed trail?
This will help you learn a new area.It will also sharpen your skills. Also If you go back to the same area. Don't walk the same way every time.Maybe even just 50' away from where you would normally go, or zig zag through a given area.If you make a circle, go backwards from time to time.
So I hope these tips can be of help to you. They have saved me before. They also have helped me to learn a new area without getting lost. And yes I have been turned around many times and have had to walk a long way to get back but I did get back, Tired but made it back.
If you have any tips feel free to add to this post.

Yesterdays Finds
We hiked several miles yesterday. If you were following the tracker was a bit closer then the time before. However it still showed us in a total different location. Oh well at least we were shown in the county. We saw some deer and found the Pelican Cr stage station. [See yesterday post].We also found an old homestead. And a pair of ponds.

Todays Mini Adventure
It was nearly another skunked day today. I filmed a black squirl but he just sat there like a stone statue.I walked in an out of draws, across meadows, and through the woods.I thought I was going to be skunked but on the way out I saw a small herd of elk.
The mobile blog worked well but the locator was a bit off. I turned the GPS on and then forgot to update the locator beckon. Oh well. Trial and error. Mostly I would say t was a success.
Below are some of what I saw today.

Cant see the forest for the tree's
Sometimes we don't see the forest for the trees. Anytime you venture out into the woods, whether you know the area or not always remember these thoughts:
Pay attention to how the enviroment changes. Look at unusual trees, stumps ,ground abnormalities, meadows, markings on trees. Sometimes you can find section markers on trees. These are helpful if you have a map, but can still be a useful small "landmark"as well.
Don't take it for granted that you know where you always are. Many times the forest or the lay of the land can look alike. You walk across it and whamo! this isn't where you thought you were let alone where you were suppost to come out. So always remember to see "The forest for the trees".

Lost Tip #5 Don't Panic
If you're out hiking and you suddenly find out you are lost, DON'T PANIC! I know it sounds cliche but it is true.If you realize you are lost don't run, start walking fast. The best thing to do Is stop sit down if you can, and breath. Deep breaths can help you calm down. Then look around.
Once you are calm If you haven't already found out where you are look for a high point to go to look for those large "landmarks".Then you can reorient yourself and find your way again.
Don't think its not easy to get turned around or lost. I've been turned around so many times. And in country I know like the back of my hand.

Lost in the woods? Tip #3
Don't walk with your head down. Sounds like a no- brainer....but its not. Its a habit that is easy to get into. Its a sure fire way to get lost.
Story: My great aunt woke up one morning and stepped out of her camper. She was walking out to the bathroom. And of course she was walking with her head down. She stopped and looked up for some reason, only to be nose to nose with a bear. She screamed and turned and her and the bear ran as hard as they could both in opposite directions.
The moral of the story: Keep your HEADS UP!

Lost in the woods? Tip #2
When you are walking look at landmarks. Landmarks? They could be an unusual tree growth, snag, rock out cropping, or some other unusual out of place thing. Its is best to look for something fixed and cannot move. This way it will be there on the way back. Remember tip#1 to look back at these things so you know what they look like on the back side. Its tough to know what things look like if you dont look at them.An unusual tree
All of these are good landmarks. You could call them memory marks. On the way back you will remember them.

This is really special
This is one of those rare moments you dont see every day. http://youtu.be/w7Lf4zKlYxw
Welcome to my blog
Welcome guest,
As you can see this is my first blog. What I plan to do with it is keep anyone who is interested in following my Projects, Trips, Ect. I have a couple of projects I am currently working on. Obviously this is one of them. The other ones? I'm working on a reality show. Filming and editing it,directing ect. At this time I don't want to reveal what the subject matter is, but I hope to have a first episode by the spring sometime. Then I will reveal it and have a video episode.
The other project is filming animals in their natural habitat. While I don't blame people for filming in national parks, to me its cheating. Also that isn't their real environment. The animals are used to people so they just stand there, or are not as nervous as they are n the wild.So I feel just about anyone can get great photos and video.I go out and hike in the "real" environment. I take my cameras a backpack with a bit of food and out I go. It is a challenge to get good footage but the rewards are really good.
My goal is to share with you what happens in as real time as I can. I will have updates on the next outing as they become planned. I will post pictures and video excerpts of what I'm doing. When I have enough footage I will then make a documentary and put it onto Blue-Ray DVD. I film in HD.
I hope you enjoy the ride. Check back from time to time for updates on progress an the next outing.
