R and R and the Redwoods

Today was then first of our R and R. We had finished 14 days of fire work. We will be back to work on the 28th.
We decided that since we were only an hour and a half from the great Redwoods we just had to go. So we did see them and also we went to the California coast.
Rather then bore you with a bunch of talk I will let you look at the pictures of our day.
Enjoy, we did.

Rain Delay

We are in a rain delay on the fire. We have had some good rain. The fire is mostly out. The plan though the is to burn some of the fire border. It is my thought that they are turning this wildland incident into a controlled fire. They do this to manage the forest resources. Below is some pictures of our rainy fire.

Big Windy Update

Yesterday the smoke was as thick as fog. It was hard on everyone. The fire didn't do to much on our end. It did jump Howard Creek yesterday. It was about five acres. They were really worried about it.
Things have changed on the fire this morning. We had a thunderstorm and some rain. The wind also was gusting for a while. The most of the smoke has blown out. The only smokes are where there are hot pockets still burning.  The fire is at 23,708 acres. It has slowed down for now but the rain really didn't do much. It did knock down the dust though.
Here is some more pictures of the last few days and today.

Spot Fire

Yesterday we hit the fire line and the fire was waking up a bit. We were on patrol and we saw a lot of smoke bellowing up. It was below our road. We pulled over and sure enough the fire made a run up the hill. It started a spot fire above the road. (The road is our fire containment line)  They sent in two hand crews in to work it. We supplied the water, hose, and other misc parts. One of the crews stayed foam on the hill with his water cannon.
Here is some of the pictures of what happened. I'm sorry I don't have any pictures of the blow up. I was videoing it. When the season ends I will post it. It was crazy. It roared like a freight train.
Things are going well here our last day on our assignment may be the 25th. I will try to keep you up to date as I can. As always the signal is scetchy at best. In fact I am writing this so when I am in a signal  area I can post it.

Pictures

Big Windy

Were back in service. We were spiked In an area called Eden Valley. We were several hours from the main camp. We still haven't seen much fire. However yesterday we saw a black edge where fire was. Today we are again on another part of the fire. Branch 1 division D/E. I will try to upload some of the pictures I have been taking. We have seen some real nice country. On a side note we may be here for a while.
This country is really steep and the diversity of trees and shrubs here is amazing.
I will try to keep you up to speed as I can.

Big Windy Update

The fire is up to 10,841 acres. There is three fires In our complex. The Calvert is 163 acres. Jenny fire is 3,092 acres. Big Windy fire is 7,572. The neighbor fire, the Douglas complex is creeping closer to us. They may join together at some point.
We have been doing structure preparation. Getting the cabins protection from fire if it comes over here. We also set up sprinklers around the house and test them out. They worked good when WD tested them.
Today is our last shift until next Monday. We are going to take some R&R.
Below is some pictures of what we are doing.

Big Windy Complex Day 1

Good day today. Saw some steep country along the Rouge River. We went way in to a couple of cabins and started structure protection. We cleared brush from around house and limed up trees..
Tomorrow we will wrap the cabins with a protective foil cover and also set up a sprinkler system to wet the homes and the land around. I will upload a few shots of what we saw today. Until tomorrow. Have a nice day.:)
